About The Scheme
The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) is a low-cost food membership service designed to make life more affordable for people on a low income.
Operating across various communities TBBT works by redistributing surplus food from supermarkets, manufacturers, and farms that would otherwise go to waste.
For just a small weekly membership fee, individuals and families can receive a substantial food package containing fresh fruit and veg, chilled goods, and cupboard staples, helping members save money while also reducing food waste.
Unlike traditional foodbanks, TBBT is not a crisis-only service.
Anyone can join as a member, making it an accessible, stigma-free way to ease the pressure of rising living costs.
Once signed up, members can collect their food parcels from a local hub each week, with collection sites often hosted by churches, community centres, and schools.
Volunteers are on hand to help, and the pickup process is friendly and quick.
Many hubs also offer a chance to chat with others and access further community support.
The Bread and Butter Thing is more than just affordable food, it’s a growing movement focused on dignity, sustainability, and community.
By offering good quality food at a fraction of the price, it empowers families to stretch their budgets, improve nutrition, and reduce stress.
TBBT also connects people to other helpful services, including budgeting advice, health support, and wellbeing activities.
It’s a practical, long-term solution to food insecurity that’s making a real difference in neighbourhoods across the UK.
